Two police officers were rushed to hospital on Friday lunchtime after they crashed their patrol car into a wall on Essex road while responding to an emergency call.

A witness described the “very strange noise” of the crash as “like an alien landing”.

Bob Tankard, who works in an art supplies shop opposite the scene of the accident, said: “It was almost like a science fiction noise. We looked outside and saw lots of steam coming from the engine and air bags blown up everywhere.”

The officers were treated for minor injuries and a spokeswoman from Islington Police said they were “doing well” after the incident.

Scotland yard confirmed the vehicle was on a 999 call but refused to say whether it was speeding or involved in a chase.

The incident, which happened at 12.55pm at the junction with Halliford Street, is under investigation by the Metropolitan Police Traffic Unit.

Asked about the incident, Islington Borough Commander Gerry Campbell said the public should appreciate the risks officers take to protect the public.

He said: “Police put themselves at risk everyday to detect and prevent crime. We should all recognise the dangerous position they are often put in protecting the public. We wish the officers injured a speedy recovery.”
